Welcome
To Generation Z!!!
Tytan |
Are you tired of being blasted with the same old songs on radio as if there are no young artists in Zimbabwe? Do you want to know some new generation singers who are making waves in the local and international scene? Which are the latest Zim tracks rocking the internet and social media? There is time for everything. It’s time for Vadhara/Abadala to get off the stage. If you are still stuck in the past, if you still think Oliver Mtukudzi or any of those golden oldies is the best, then you belong to the old generation. This is time for the new generation. Welcome to Generation Z. What is Generation Z?? (those born 1993 onwards) and of course there is space for the Late Generation Y (those born as from 1987) to squeeze in.
Mr Kamera |
We are
going to feature the best songs/music videos by new generation Zimbabwean
artists. These are artists who have a following among the Z and Y generation.
Any music
video that finds its way on this post was carefully selected based on the
quality of video and/or music.
Zimbabwean
musicians, especially those of the old era have been known to produce poor
quality videos, not because they lack resources but because they are old fashioned Pamusika/Erenkini types
who lack creativity, can’t move with the times, and can’t learn from
international artists. South Africans have been producing high quality music
videos for quite a long time even during the apartheid era, so why are our Zim
brothers and sisters so backward!?
Tytan
– Bho (Bata Bho) Starring Stunner 2017
So far,
this is without doubt one of the best music videos by a Zimbabwean artist.
Tytan is the man of the moment. Ever since Tytan made a collabo with Ammara
Brown on Mukoko, he has never rested on his laurels. In this new video titled “Bata
Bho” produced in February this year, the Mukoko King upped the
standard to international levels, establishing himself as the Kanye West of
Zimbabwe, a trendsetter and innovative artist who moves with the times. Just by
watching this video, you would think it was produced by one of the best US
directors, but hey it’s a local production. Tytan is also a multilingual singer
who can easily switch between English, Shona and Ndebele in a single track.

Bryan K - Heavy
Machine- Official Music Video
Bryan K is a talented singer and
instrumentalist. In this video titled “Heavy Machine” he put up a fantastic and
exceptional video with beautiful scenes that makes you think it’s a video by
Naak. That’s how the standard is improving in Zim. This hit music track came at
number 3 on StarFM 2016 End of Year List. It beat a lot of established giants
like Jah Prayzah and Winky D. Heavy Machine is a song that celebrates the
natural beauty of African women i.e. curves, dark chocolate skin etc.

Ammara Brown needs no introduction, an
artist of international calibre, she is the top female artist in Zimbabwe at
the moment, and it won’t surprise me if she takes the continental title in the
years to come. If you liked her popular hit
“Mukoko”, then you would also like this new video titled “Wachu Want”. It’s a
more high quality video which deserves much applause.

Bantu – Holiday (Official Music Video)
US-based Zimbabwean producer T-Collar (Tinashe Sibanda) also known as Bantu, came up with a track titled “Holiday” a vibrant Eurodance track that you can’t resist dancing to. The wonderful female voice and beat in the song would make you think that it’s another dope track by a young Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears or Nicki Minaj. Remember that Nicki Minaj was not always a rapper, Starships - a euro dance track is one of her best selling singles.
Holiday is a music video that meshes an African tale with Euro sounds. The song starts with a 55-second scene, African militiamen hunting down a couple, and speaking in Shona. You should watch it!
SIDE NOTE: Fans Criticize Winky D’s Video
X X
A lot of fans on YouTube have criticized Winky D’s video “Disappear” saying it’s a cheap video that doesn’t make sense i.e. doesn’t portray the happy mood that comes with the song. Compared with the rubbish that has been produced by most Zim artists in the past, Winky D’s video is far much better, but considering Winky D’s big-name status in the music industry, people were expecting something more creative, relevant, scenic and high-budget. As some fans put it:

As some fans put it:
- “Cool video but I think you
should do another video that incorporates the general public, coz this
song relates to everyone and you can do the video like happy people...e.g.
pamusika wembare or shopping malls ku gochi gochi people being happy...you
need more people in this type of song” - CC
- “Videos of songz like these
need a storyline...u need to act them...showing us u eating money...
showing us who Bobo is drinking Amarula etc...This video is way too cheap
and is not connecting with the song...” - PM
- “It’s a happy song for crying
out loud....you could have gone to the beach or a club” - TZ
- “This video is so boring...” -
TM
- “This video did not portray the
true image of happiness...” - TC
- “I thought this was going to be
a party themed video...with people dancing and having fun...” - PD
- “This video needed more life
more colour” - ED
In other words, what Winky D’s fans wanted was a jovial and lively party video like this one:

The reaction on Winky D’s YouTube video shows how the current generation takes video quality seriously. This is a generation whose life revolves around social media – Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat etc. A majority of them have smartphones and tablets which are connected to the internet 24/7 days a week. They are highly exposed to high standards of media on platforms such as YouTube VEVO, and they won't tolerate anything less.
